Psychological Evaluation

A psychological evaluation is conducted for a variety of purposes. An evaluation may be used for diagnostic clarification and treatment planning, assessment of developmental status of young children, identification of academic and cognitive strengths and weaknesses, assessment of ADHD or learning disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder testing, or identifying unique personality traits and characteristics that contribute to an individual’s mental health, well-being, and relationship functioning, among others. After the initial intake interview (typically lasting between 1-2 hours), a testing battery is developed to address the unique presenting concerns and testing questions a family or individual presents. Testing typically takes place in 1-2 testing sessions that last between 2 and 4 hours, depending on an individual’s needs, and may also involve a young child’s caregivers. Dr. Nichols-Jones regularly gathers important information from teachers, family members, and other treatment providers, as indicated, to inform the test results and recommendations. After the testing has concluded, Dr. Nichols-Jones synthesizes all information gathered, including rating scales, standardized tests, observations, interviews, and records, to formulate a complete clinical picture and diagnostic impressions. Dr. Nichols-Jones provides a feedback session to go over test results, treatment and/or school recommendations, and to answer questions the family or individual may have. A full psychological report will also be provided at the conclusion of the evaluation process.
